Mindfulness offers deeply helpful teachings and practices\, so I warmly invite you to join. \n\n\nIt is entirely possible to create new\, mindful\, positive habits. This is certainly possible with the practice of loving speech and deep listening toward ourselves. ~Sister Dang Nghiem \nThe Inner Critic relies upon an idea of a self—a small self—that is imperfect and must be fixed. It feeds on comparing\, on thoughts of past and future\, of mistakes and anxieties. The Inner Critic has no traction in the present moment. When our minds become quiet\, when we are resting in this very moment\, there is no past or future\, there is no comparing. The small self expands to become a huge field of calm awareness in which sensations\, thoughts\, and voices come and go. ~Jan Chozen Bays \nMindfulness and concentration practice has allowed me to become more aware of my urge to compare. SUMMARY:Love\, Desire & Nonattachment
DESCRIPTION:Learn what nonattachment really means; it is often misunderstood as not caring\, but it is not that at all: it is a loving\, freeing practice. Understand what nonattachment means in relationships and how to practice it mindfully. Release from clinging that causes suffering. Let go of past loves and hurts and from fixating on the future. Love and desire more fully and freely in the present. This can be tough to do\, but there are supportive teachings and practices from diverse wisdom and liberation traditions that can help us. If you are struggling presently\, or generally struggle with clinging or letting go\, or needing someone/s to be a certain way that they really can’t be\, having a tendency to control\, this is for you. And even if you are in ongoing healthy relationships\, this can help you keep it fresh and generous. \nThe session will include meditation and other mindfulness practices\, teaching and sharing (there is no obligation to share). It will not be recorded. \nCurious about what nonattachment in love relationships means? \nNonattachment does not mean that we are not loyal or faithful\, if that is our arrangement. It does mean that we release from clinging and fixation\, and open to the changing nature of all emotions\, beings and relationships. \nEveryone and everything is impermanent; emotions change; relationships change and end\, even if it’s at life’s end. If we accept at the beginning that everything ends\, then we can begin to let go of constant planning\, measuring and worrying about the future and where the relationship will go. We can be more fully aware and alive in the present\, more curious\, open and clear about where we are now. We can also be clearer and braver in deciding when it’s time to let go of someone. \nWant to know more about nonattachment and breakups? \nNonattachment does not mean that we do not take care of hurt from past relationships. It does mean that we learn and let go\, that we leave the past and live fully in the present\, allowing ourselves to grow\, change and be who we are now\, and our ex/es to do the same\, outside of our control. \nWhat about nonattachment and desire? \nNonattachment does not mean that we let go of discernment and boundaries. It does mean that we can be curious and open-ended\, without a fixed goal. It does not mean that we must be super-sexual or even sexual. It does mean that we release from craving and take time to sense into our longings and their sources\, the different ways we might meet them\, and how they may shift and alter. \nIt has always seemed to me that an essential distinction in meaning exists between the choice of “detachment” and “nonattachment”… Detachment implies the extinction of feeling. In nonattachment the river-life of emotion continues\, only our relationship to it alters. ~ Jane Hirshfield \nInstead of focusing all that longing on a particular person\, I wanted to experience the immensity of its reach. I wanted to dive into longing\, into communion\, into the love I knew was its essence. I invited the longing—”Go head\, please. Be as full as you are.” I knew then I could finally let go. ~ Tara Brach \nBecause the object [of desire] is always unsatisfying to some degree\, it is our insistence on its being otherwise that causes suffering. Not that desiring is negative in itself. We can learn to linger in the space between desire and its satisfaction\, explore that space a bit more. By renouncing clinging we actually deepen desire. Clinging keeps desire in a frozen\, fixated\, state. When we renounce efforts to control or possess that which we desire\, we free desire itself. In psychodynamic language\, this is the ability to have a relationship between two subjects\, instead of a subject and an object. Can you give your lover the freedom of their subjectivity and otherness? Admit that they are outside of your control?  ~ Mark Epstein

Some are as long as lizards\, others so short that they never even make it to The End. But the invisible story is unlike any other story because no one has ever read it! It lives hidden in the darkest corner of the library\, far from where the famous tales\, written in gold letters\, shine. One day\, a blind reader approaches the story’s trembling pages. This reader is unlike any reader the invisible story has ever encountered. And when she runs her fingertips over the book’s white pages\, it is astonished by what she finds. A beautifully inclusive tale about sight-loss in which we learn that not all stories are meant to be read with the eyes. \nSpeakers: \nJaime Gamboa is an award-winning Costa Rican author and musician. His books have been translated into English\, Danish\, Korean\, Japanese\, Turkish\, Chinese and French. \nWen Hsu Chen is a Costa Rican artist and architect who graduated with BFA Honors from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her watercolor and cut-out paper technique has earned her multiple awards\, including the Grand Prize at the NOMA Concours 2008. \nAlex Strick is a children’s book author\, consultant\, reviewer\, and co-founder of Outside in World\, with a passion for putting children’s views and voices first. \nKyla is a student at New College Worcester\, the independent school for students aged 11–19 who are blind or partially sighted. Kyla is an enthusiastic braille reader. \nDaniel Hahn is a celebrated British writer\, editor and translator. To join via MS Teams\, please register here. \n\nOn Thursday 23 October at 5pm UK time we will be in conversation with the leaders of the project Building a Global Youth Literature Collection 101\, sponsored by The Global Literature in Libraries Initiative. \n\n\nThe impact of global events is unmistakably apparent in our daily lives\, yet many Americans\, especially children and teenagers\, know little of world events and cultures. Moreover\, those best positioned to spark their learning — particularly librarians\, who are charged with bringing the knowledge of the world even to their littlest patrons — are ill-equipped to help them. Shockingly\, only a handful of accredited U.S. library schools even offer courses in international youth literature. \nThe Building a Global Youth Literature Collection 101 website is intended to serve as a toolkit for librarians\, but also for others who wish to learn more about youth literature — especially translations — from other countries. A global collection helps librarians serve communities with families from different countries and cultures\, helps children develop greater international understanding\, opens avenues for curiosity\, and creates opportunities for learning from counterparts abroad. \nUsed well\, these books can open windows\, unlock doors\, and serve as mirrors. To this end we provide curated booklists created by librarians\, subject matter experts\, and community contributors in the Starter Kit and aggregate relevant web-based materials in the resource-rich Hub. Together\, they are a one-stop shop for the global youth literature novice\, and the project leaders hope that even those already familiar with this literature will discover something new. \nSpeakers: \nDr. Annette Y. Goldsmith is the librarian at the Levy Library\, Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel in Los Angeles. She is the founding editor of the online children’s literature journal\, The Looking Glass. An international youth literature specialist\, she teaches online graduate classes in children’s and young adult literature and librarianship\, most recently for the Kent State University Information School. \nDr. Marc Aronson is Associate Professor of Practice\, Library and Information Science\, at the Rutgers School of Communication and Information. He has worked in the field of literature for younger readers for more than thirty years as an author\, editor\, speaker\, publisher\, and critic. He is the only person to have been a winner or finalist for both of the American Library Association’s prizes for excellence in youth nonfiction as both an author and as an editor.\n\nDavid Jacobson is a journalist\, author and Japanese translator. His award-winning picture book biography\, Are You an Echo? The Lost Poetry of Misuzu Kaneko\, introduced the life and work of a beloved Japanese children’s poet to English-language readers. He is currently writing a biography of Jella Lepman\, founder of the International Youth Library and the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY).

SUMMARY:Children’s Books in the Russia-Ukraine War: The Role of Translations

To join via MS Teams\, please register here. \nHow do children’s books cross borders in wartime and what happens to them when they do? This joint talk traces the translational lives of war-related titles from commissioning to circulation\, and the challenges the publishers meet along the way. Birgitte Beck Pristed introduces the Aarhus University project PUBLISH: Children’s Books in the Russia-Ukraine War\, examining how Ukrainian and Russian children’s publishers operate under wartime conditions and how the books reflect child readers’ experiences of war and dislocation. In this talk\, she focuses on the publishers’ hurdles of bringing books across borders. Drawing on new interviews with Ukrainian publishers\, Nadia Pavlyk examines how international support and solidarity are negotiated in practice\, and how these transnational networks shape the capacity to produce\, translate\, and present war-themed children’s literature under fire. Finally\, Ekaterina Shatalova shows how\, in Russia’s “hybrid” censorship environment\, translated children’s books become politically charged objects: the same titles can function as cultural solidarity while being securitised as “threats.” Together\, the speakers argue that translation is double-edged – both a vehicle of ethical resistance and a liability within contested information regimes. \nEkaterina Shatalova is a PhD fellow at Aarhus University\, working on the project “PUBLISH: Children’s Books in the Russia-Ukraine War.” Before turning to conflict and children’s books\, she earned a Master’s degree in Victorian literature at Oxford University (2018)\, followed by Erasmus Mundus International degree in Children’s Literature\, Media and Culture (2022). She is also a prolific translator of children’s books and TV shows. When not translating\, she scouts and reviews books for international publishers and book organisations (IBBY\, Children’s Books Ireland). Her recent article “Image of Migrants and Refugees in Contemporary Russian Children’s Literature: A Case Study of Alexey Oleynikov’s Works” (2024) was published in Filoteknos. \nNadiia Pavlyk is a Doctor of Science (Social Pedagogy)\, a professor at the Department of Social Technologies (Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University\, Ukraine) and a researcher of the MSCA4Ukraine project DaR:ua “Dialogues and Reading: Shared Reading for Ukrainian Young People” (Department of Global Studies\, Aarhus University\, Denmark). Her research focuses on non-formal education for excluded groups\, youth work and youth policy based on Council of Europe standards and approaches\, shared reading and children’s books in the Russia-Ukraine war. \nBirgitte Beck Pristed is Associate Professor in Russian Studies at the Department of Global Studies\, Aarhus University\, Denmark. She holds a Ph.D. from the Johannes-Gutenberg-University of Mainz\, Germany\, awarded with distinction 2014. She is author of an illustrated monograph on post-Soviet Russian book design and print culture The New Russian Book. A Graphic Cultural History (New Directions in Book History\, Palgrave\, 2017). Her main research areas are print and media history of the Soviet and post-Soviet eras with a second strand in children’s books. To join via MS Teams\, please register here. \n\nArabic Young Adult Literature in Translation: in conversation with translators\, advocates and scholars of Arabic-language writing for young audiences\, Sawad Hussain\, Susanne Abou Ghaida and Marcia Lynx Qualey. Despite a huge\, diverse base of speakers and vibrant publishing industries\, relatively little Arabic-language literature is available in translation to readers of English. This is particularly true of books for children and young adults. \nDrawing on many collective years of experience in the field\, our speakers will talk about what kind of Arabic-language YA is getting translated into English\, who is translating and publishing these works\, and what might be behind some of these trends. They will offer us a window into the scouting and pitching processes\, discussing the specific challenges and opportunities that they face in translating children’s books from Arabic to English. We will learn about advocacy initiatives such as ArabKidLitNow! and the Bila Hudood digital literary festival\, hear about what titles they have translated recently\, and what they are hoping to translate next. \nSpeakers: \nSawad Hussain is a PEN Award-winning translator from Arabic. She has been shortlisted for The Warwick Prize for Women in Translation\, the Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize and the National Book Award for Translation\, and longlisted for the Moore Prize in Human Rights Writing\, among others. A former co-chair of the Translators’ Association in the UK\, Sawad has also served as a judge for the Palestine Book Awards and the 2023 National Translation Award. She has run translation workshops under the auspices of Shadow Heroes\, Africa Writes\, Shubbak Festival\, the Yiddish Book Center\, the British Library and the National Centre for Writing. In 2024\, she became the first translator-in-residence for Wasafiri\, and was the Spring 2025 translator-in-residence at PIIRS\, Princeton University. \nMarcia Lynx Qualey is a writer\, publisher\, editor\, translator\, and speaker. She is the founder of ArabLit & ArabLit Quarterly\, for which she won an Ottaway Award for the Promotion of International Literature in 2024. Her personal focus is on translated literature for young readers\, including YA\, middle grade\, and chapter books. Her most recent is a co-translation — with Sawad Hussain — of Maria Daadouch’s I Want Golden Eyes. \nSusanne Abou Ghaida is a researcher specialised in Arabic children’s and adolescent literature. She has a PhD from the University of Glasgow\, and her doctoral research was on the contemporary Arabic adolescent novel. From 2023 to 2025\, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Aix-Marseille University\, where she was carrying out research on The 13 Devils\, an Arab espionage/adventure series for adolescents. She has written on a number of subjects\, including multicultural picture books; disability; Arabic adolescent literature and reading response. She is currently the Vice President of the Young Adult Studies Association and Senior Editor of the International Journal of Young Adult Literature.
